We reject this museum.
Essayism is not an ornament; it is a defensive weapon of intellectual survival. When Michel de Montaigne created his Essais in the 16th century, he was navigating the blood, ash, and fanatical certainties of the French Wars of Religion. As the Mayor of Bordeaux, operating at the sharp end of governance and acting as a frontline diplomat for Henri IV, Montaigne did not write to decorate. He used the provisional, fragmented, self-correcting loose page to survive the totalitarian ideologies of his era. His concept of bonne foi was a radical, exposed act of resistance against automated conformity.
We assert revision as epistemology and as a vital democratic act.
In the 21st century, the greatest threat to a free society is the machinery of automated certainty. Algorithms profit from tribal polarization, demanding instant, unyielding stances and punishing nuance. Democracy cannot function when citizens are trapped in absolute, manufactured echo chambers.
To practice essayism today is to actively participate in democratic health. It is the refusal to think in pre-packaged slogans. By processing the world through the raw, self-correcting loose page, we claim the right to hesitate, to doubt, and to change our minds in public. Revision is not a sign of weakness; it is the ultimate civic discipline.
